چکیده

The extent to which different agricultural strategies may affect the uptake of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) by cropped plants is not entirely understood at a field scale. This study addresses effect seasonality, Trichoderma inoculation alone, or combined with applications commercial-grade clinoptilolite (i.e., foliar action, fertigation, and pellet) on PTE content early- late-ripening cultivars Cucumis melo L. Two similar experiments were performed in spring summer. For each cultivar/treatment combination, input PTEs [namely, chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb)] into soil-crop system through irrigation water, fertilizers, pesticides, treatment products products), as well melon stem, leaves, fruit, measured inductively coupled plasma-optic emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Neither alone nor had visible plants, whereas early season cultivation was strongly associated reduced Cu Pb. high correlation Pb stem leaf calcium (Ca) (used proxy for transpiration rates under growing seasons) indicated possible these metals Ca nonselective cation channels defense against drought stress. Reduced concentrations found early-ripening fruit cultivated spring. Concerning risk management, case significant contamination Mediterranean calcareous soils, are suggested instead ones.

The genome of melon (Cucumis melo L.).

We report the genome sequence of melon, an important horticultural crop worldwide. We assembled 375 Mb of the double-haploid line DHL92, representing 83.3% of the estimated melon genome. We predicted 27,427 protein-coding genes, which we analyzed by reconstructing 22,218 phylogenetic trees, allowing mapping of the orthology and paralogy relationships of sequenced plant genomes. We observed the ...

Mapping and Characterization of the fefe Gene That Controls Iron Uptake in Melon (Cucumis melo L.)

Iron (Fe) deficiency in plants limits crop growth and productivity. Molecular mechanisms that plants use to sense and respond to Fe deficiency by coordinated expression of Fe-uptake genes are not fully understood. The C940-fe chlorotic melon (Cucumis melo) mutant known as fefe is unable to upregulate Fe-uptake genes, however, the FeFe gene had not been identified. In this study, we used two F2 ...

Evaluation of stream sediment contamination by potentially toxic elements around mining and farming areas (SE Nigeria)

In this work, the concentrations of the potentially toxic elements in stream sediments in SE Nigeria were assessed for pollution monitoring in mining, quarrying, and farming areas. The levels of iron, molybdenum, vanadium, copper, lead, zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese, chromium, barium, and beryllium were determined. The concentrations of the elements were in the order of Fe > Ba > Mn > Cr > Zn...
